Cork floors are a new alternative that is beginning to be established thanks to some of its unexpected virtues. To be more precise, it is not exactly a new trend. It is rather a material that returns after a few decades, during which it has been unfairly treated. Cork floors are a resistant, ergonomic, ecological solution, with good insulation and a different natural and striking appearance.
From the aesthetic point of view it can be found in different finishes, formats and sizes , although always under its characteristic appearance of irregular grain patterns. It is possible to apply dyes to obtain different colors or shades.
It can be found with manufacturing similar to that of a laminate. That is, a top layer of cork and underneath a base in another material such as an MDF or even some wood such as pine or fir. And also in plates or tiles. Therefore the cork floors can be glued with adhesives or glue to the subfloor or floating floors. It is the latter, floating cork flooring, that are representing a real novelty in the sector.
Normally these floors come with an applied treatment (sealing, varnish ...) however it is advisable to renew it after a few years, in order to avoid stains and seal for the passage of moisture.

Advantages of cork floors
As with bamboo floors , they are a green or renewable alternative. It is obtained from the bark of some trees, so it is not even necessary to cut them down. The bark regenerates completely in a few years and the environmental impact is very low when performed under proper planning.
It gives a soft feeling when stepping on, very different from the one offered by the other options. In certain areas it is considered a great advantage, for example in rooms for children or gyms where heavy machinery is not used and activities are performed on the ground (yoga, gyms, exercises for pregnant women ...). In addition, this natural elasticity of cork flooring is good for joints and walking.
These floors are antistatic.
It has an excellent behavior against moisture , as long as it is not constant. There are no problems for use in kitchens, in fact it is very common to see them in this type of environment.
Cork is a material that is often used to soundproof rooms when used as a wall covering, this effect is also achieved when used as a floor.
It is a very good thermal insulator, so it helps keep the house temperature stable.
It recovers its original state when it is dented when stepped on or when strong pressure is exerted on it.
The surface of the cork floors is non-slip.
They are ideal for those homes where people who suffer from allergies live. They do not generate dust, they repel mold and fungi. The suberin , a natural polymer, makes hypoallergenic .
Disadvantages of cork floors
Contrary to what cork floors may seem, they are not the cheapest alternative. You can find lower laminate or vinyl prices. Although it is cheaper than solid wood or porcelain.
Although they are resistant, care must be taken when dragging heavy elements on them, for example furniture, since deterioration could be important. Use a blanket if you need to move furniture.
Although many like the uneven and random design of the cork, although it can also be said that it is not to the taste of many others. The designs and options, although they exist, are limited.
It needs periodic maintenance, every few years it will be necessary to renew its finish.
Sunlight, if it is direct and constant, will affect its hue.
